The word ‘osteoporosis’ means ‘porous bone’. It is a medical condition that weakens the bones, making them more susceptible to sudden and unexpected fractures. Most of the time, fractures are caused in the hip, wrist and spine.

According to the World Health Organization, about 200 million people have osteoporosis across the world. This disease is four times more prevalent among women than men. After the age of 50, women are at a greater risk of suffering from osteoporosis-related fractures because they have 30 per cent less bone density.

Suffering from osteoporosis can also expose you to the risk of developing several other medical conditions. Some of them include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, asthma, multiple sclerosis, etc.

Deficiency of calcium is one of the leading causes of osteoporosis. Bones are made of a living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. However, when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bones, it leads to osteoporosis. It is also caused if you are underweight or suffering from an eating disorder.

Any disease if diagnosed at an early stage can be cured very easily. If you are experiencing pain and discomfort in your back, neck, hip, waist, or have had an early menopause, or took steroids for several months, then you should see a doctor.
