According to a recent study of over 4,000 women at a medical camp, 75 per cent of them were ignorant of bone problems and were not taking any dietary supplements. The preliminary report emerged from a 'Bone Mineral Densitometry Osteoporosis Detection' camp organised by Mumbai Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (MOGS).

"This was the biggest-ever free camp of its kind in the country and we examined over 4,000 women patients for bone mineral density at 38 locations in Mumbai. A tentative analysis has thrown up some disturbing facts which the medical fraternity should take strong note of," MOGS President Dr Niranjan Chavan told IANS.

Of the total women patients examined in the camps, 200 (5.2 per cent) were detected with the dreaded osteoporosis, and another 1,700 (47.6 per cent) had osteopenia with a T-score of (-1.0 to -2.5), sounding alarm bells for them, he said. "The bigger concern was that a staggering 75 per cent of all the women patients had virtually no knowledge of bone diseases or any dietary supplements to curb them, while the rest (25 per cent) were partly aware and already taking Calcium and Vitamin D supplements, besides sticking to a proper and nutritional diet," said Dr Chavan.

Surprisingly, a majority of the ignoramus patients (91.2 per cent) were well-educated, 41.2 per cent are either graduates or pursuing a degree course, 28.9 are secondary school level pass-outs, while 17.3 per cent had acquired primary education and only the remaining 8.8 per cent were illiterates.

Dr Yuvraj Kumar, an Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement & Sports Injury expert at Accord Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad, "Due to the asymptomatic nature of the disease, poor healthcare facilities in several parts of the world and lack of awareness, only 20 per cent of the total number of osteoporotic patients get diagnosed or treated every year."

He added, "It has been noticed that the disease is more prevalent in elderly females as they tend to lose 20 per cent of their bone density after 5-7 years of menopause. The day helps in creating awareness and encourages people to get an early diagnosis and checkup of their bone density. They are educated about tips and ways that ensure healthy bones and prevent the occurrence of prolonged osteoporosis."

1. Exercise: Regular exercise keeps your bones and muscles well-oiled and moving.

2. Nutrition: Always ensure that your diet is rich in bone-healthy nutrients like calcium, Vitamin D and protein.

3. Lifestyle: Avoid negative habits like drinking and smoking.

4. Testing: Get yourself tested if you have a family history of osteoporosis to know whether you have any of the risk factors associated with the same.

5. Treatment: Lifestyle changes and medication are needed if you are at high risk for the same.

If you are over the age of 50 and have one or more than one risk factor associated with osteoporosis, discuss the same with your doctor and get an assessment done of your bone health. Recommendations regarding lifestyle changes may be given and for those who are at high risk, medication may also be prescribed for protection.
